In our upcoming release, we’ve made big improvements to the registration process, making it easier than ever for new users to sign up. Plus, they’ll be able to reach out to you without having to share any personal information — simple and secure!
How the Old Registration Process Worked
The original Bilby requirements were shaped by one of our early adopters, the Canberra Bushwalking Club (CBC). Naturally, account registration was one of the first features we built.
In CBC’s legacy system, there were issues with bots creating fake accounts. To address this, account registration was essentially hidden behind the booking process — which made signing up a bit of a hassle.
Here’s how the process used to work:
- A user would try to create a booking.
- They’d be prompted to register an account and fill out their details (A huge process - see below).
- Once registered, they’d have to go back and complete the booking.

This approach introduced several challenges:
- The most common complaint was “I don’t know how to create an account.”
- Users who just wanted to ask a question or get help couldn’t register unless they were ready to book.
- The process was long and confusing — some users would complete verification but then forget to finish the booking!
- Registration was only possible if there was an “Open to Public” activity available.
Moving Toward a More User-Friendly Future
At Bilby, we’re committed to making things easy for new users by following familiar and intuitive patterns. Our goal is to let new users create an account and engage with a club as seamlessly as possible — all while maintaining security and data integrity.
With the new registration process, prospective users can now easily create an account (which must be verified) and submit a “Help & Support” request directly to Member Officers. How great is that? Now you can keep track of prospective users without needing to share any personal information!
